Role Summary
The Nutanix L2 Support Engineer is responsible for advanced troubleshooting, administration, and stability of Nutanix HCI (Hyperconverged Infrastructure) platforms. This role acts as a technical escalation point for L1 support teams, resolves complex infrastructure issues, and supports production environments across Data Center (DC) and Disaster Recovery (DR) sites.
The engineer works closely with vendors and application owners to ensure high availability, performance, and compliance across the infrastructure ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities
1. Advanced Monitoring and Cluster Operations
• Manage and monitor Nutanix clusters using Prism Element and Prism Central
• Perform in-depth analysis of cluster health and resiliency, node and disk issues, storage container problems, and CVM (Controller VM) health and services
• Analyze alerts, events, and logs to prevent outages and service disruptions
• Proactively identify risks related to capacity, performance, and availability
2. Incident Management and Troubleshooting (L2)
• Act as L2 escalation point for L1 issues and provide advanced technical support
• Troubleshoot complex problems including node down and CVM down scenarios, storage latency and IOPS issues, replication failures and snapshot issues, and VM performance degradation
• Perform root cause analysis (RCA) and document findings comprehensively
• Coordinate with Nutanix TAC (Technical Assistance Center) and OEM vendors when required
3. Virtualization and VM Lifecycle Management
• Execute advanced VM administration tasks including CPU, RAM, NUMA, and disk optimization, storage policy tuning, and VM migration and balancing
• Troubleshoot AHV (Acropolis Hypervisor) and ESXi hypervisor-level issues
• Support application teams for performance tuning and stability improvements
4. Storage, Backup, and DR Management
• Manage Nutanix storage components including storage pools, containers, and disk balancing and rebuilds
• Troubleshoot backup failures with Nutanix Leap and third-party backup tools
• Manage replication between DC and DR sites including protection domains, recovery plans, and failover and failback activities
• Participate in DR drills and audits to ensure business continuity preparedness
5. Patch, Upgrade, and Maintenance Activities
• Plan and execute AOS (Acropolis Operating System) upgrades, hypervisor upgrades (AHV and ESXi), and firmware and NCC (Nutanix Cluster Check) updates
• Perform pre-upgrade checks, post-upgrade validation, and rollback planning
• Ensure minimal downtime during maintenance windows through careful planning and execution
6. Capacity Planning and Performance Optimization
• Analyze capacity trends for compute and storage resources
• Recommend node expansion, storage scaling, and performance tuning actions
• Prepare capacity and utilization reports for management review
• Support budgeting and future infrastructure planning initiatives
7. Security, Compliance, and Access Control
• Implement Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) in Prism
• Support security audits and compliance checks
• Apply Nutanix security best practices across the infrastructure
• Coordinate vulnerability remediation and hardening activities
8. Change Management and Documentation
• Lead and support change management activities in accordance with ITIL frameworks
• Prepare change plans, implementation steps, and backout plans for all infrastructure changes
• Maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), runbooks, and architecture and operational documentation
• Mentor L1 engineers and conduct knowledge transfer sessions to build team capability
Technical Skills
Nutanix and HCI (Mandatory)
• Strong hands-on experience with Nutanix AOS, Prism Element and Prism Central, and NCC (Nutanix Cluster Check)
• Deep understanding of HCI architecture, storage concepts, and distributed systems
Hypervisor
• AHV (Acropolis Hypervisor) - Mandatory
• VMware ESXi - Good to have
Operating Systems
• Advanced troubleshooting capabilities in Linux distributions (RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu)
• Proficiency in Windows Server administration and troubleshooting
• Performance analysis at OS and VM level
Networking
• Solid understanding of VLANs, trunking, LACP, NIC bonding, and virtual networking concepts
• Ability to troubleshoot network-related VM issues and connectivity problems
Tools and Process Knowledge
• Experience with ticketing systems such as ServiceNow, Remedy, or Jira
• Familiarity with monitoring tools including SolarWinds, Zabbix, or similar platforms
• Strong understanding of ITIL processes including Incident Management, Change Management, Problem Management, and Root Cause Analysis
Soft Skills
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with attention to detail
• Ability to handle production-critical incidents under pressure
• Clear communication skills with customers and stakeholders at all levels
• Willingness to work in 24x7 support environments and on-call rotations

Education and Experience
Education
• Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) or Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
• Master of Computer Applications (MCA)
• Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA)
• Diploma in Information Technology
Experience
• 4 to 6 years of experience in Virtualization and HCI support roles
• Proven track record of managing enterprise-scale infrastructure
• Experience with production support in 24x7 environments
Certifications (Preferred)
• Nutanix Certified Professional (NCP) or Nutanix Certified Master (NCM)
• VMware Certified Professional (VCP)
• ITIL Foundation certification
• Linux certifications such as Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or equivalent
